Inspired by the signage used by immigrant-owned businesses in San Francisco’s Mission District, Pablo Medina recreates the vibrancy and energy of Pop art, while also making works that have a remarkable poetry about them. Generally communicating an attitude of optimism in the face of adversity, the fact that Medina’s works are often painted in acrylic on wood lends them an added level of believability—as though these were actual pieces of signage. Encouraging viewers to happily be themselves instead of advertising wares for profit, Medina’s “signs” joyfully look forward to an alternative practice of everyday life.
