Artist Glen Clarke uses his work to shed light on America’s often complex relationships with its trading partners. Thin pieces of red thread make a grid, like a game of Battleship with folded US dollars and foreign currency tucked into the individual layers, creating a series of three-dimensional objects.
The different forms of currency seamlessly blend together, highlighting the two countries’ economic web of co-dependence. In the age of billion dollar weapons contracts, money seems to be the only language of value. Clarke challenges this cynical view of diplomacy, implicating the US in its adversaries’ crimes.
